Discover the stories behind Pembroke Lodge and Richmond Park
More than a place to say “I do”
Pembroke Lodge is much more than a wedding venue and event space. For centuries it has been part of the story of Richmond Park, welcoming royalty, politicians, writers, philosophers and visitors from around the world.
Its history is closely connected to that of Richmond Park itself, a landscape that has been protected and cherished since the 17th century. Together, they form an important part of London’s heritage and continue to be enjoyed by millions of visitors each year.
From the history of Pembroke Lodge to the story of Richmond Park, there’s so much to explore, including how we’re working to preserve it all for generations to come.
From royal residence to beloved public landmark
Originally a modest cottage, Pembroke Lodge has evolved over the centuries into the beautiful Grade II listed Georgian mansion we know today.
Its former residents include Elizabeth, Countess of Pembroke, Lord John Russell, and the philosopher Bertrand Russell. Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, and Alfred Lord Tennyson are among its notable visitors.
Today, Pembroke Lodge remains one of the most recognisable and cherished buildings in Richmond Park.
Nearly 400 years of heritage
Charles I created Richmond Park in 1637 as a royal hunting ground, and it has stayed protected ever since. Thanks to this, generations of Londoners have enjoyed one of the world’s most remarkable urban parks.
Today, it’s home to ancient landscapes, free-roaming deer, and spectacular views across the capital.
From royal estate to one of London’s most treasured green spaces, the story of how it got there is well worth a read.
Preserving the story of the park
The Hearsum Collection is a registered charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Richmond Park and the wider Royal Parks.
It holds thousands of historical photographs, maps, paintings, documents, and artefacts, offering a fascinating insight into how the park has changed over four centuries.
Best of all, the collection keeps growing, driven by volunteers and historians who are passionate about protecting this important part of London’s heritage.
