A Simple Wedding Planning Timeline for Your Big Day

15 JUN 2026 3 MIN READ BY PEMBROKE LODGE

Wedding planning tends to start with a burst of excitement and a long list of ideas, but over time it naturally becomes more structured. Having a loose timeline can really help keep things moving without feeling like a project with deadlines.

The early excitement and big decisions

In the early stages, couples are usually focused on the big decisions. This is when venues are viewed, dates are considered, and the overall feel of the wedding begins to take shape. It’s also the stage where conversations tend to be more about possibilities than fixed plans, which is part of the fun.

12 to 18 months before the wedding

At this stage, it’s less about detail and more about direction. Couples are usually setting the foundations for everything that follows.

  • Choose your wedding date
  • Set a budget
  • Start looking at venues
  • Begin researching suppliers
  • Moving from ideas into real plans

Moving from ideas into real plans

As the months go on, things naturally start to feel more real. Suppliers get booked, ideas become decisions, and there’s a gradual shift from “what if” to “this is happening”. It’s also when couples often begin to picture the flow of the day a little more clearly, from the ceremony through to the evening.

9 to 12 months before the wedding

This is where the planning starts to feel more structured and less exploratory.

  • Book key suppliers
  • Start dress shopping
  • Consider accommodation options for guests
  • Plan your ceremony details
  • Refining the details

Refining the details

By this stage, the main pieces are usually in place, and attention starts to move towards personalising the day. This is where things begin to feel very real, as the visual and practical details come together.

6 to 9 months before the wedding

Most of the key decisions are now made, and it’s about refining and building out the experience.

  • Send save-the-dates
  • Finalise your guest list
  • Arrange tastings
  • Book entertainment

3 to 6 months before the wedding

This is often the stage where the wedding starts to feel very close, and everything begins to come together in a more tangible way. Stationery is ordered, suppliers are confirmed, and the finer details are considered more carefully. Couples often start choosing their menu at this point and thinking about how guests will move through the day. If transport is needed, this is also the time to arrange it so everything runs smoothly closer to the date.

  • Order stationery
  • Confirm suppliers
  • Choose your menu
  • Arrange transport if required
  • The final countdown

The final countdown

In the final months and weeks, most of the big decisions are complete. This is where the focus shifts from planning to confirming and enjoying the process. There’s often a sense of everything slowly clicking into place.

1 to 3 months before the wedding

At this point, the final details are being locked in. Guest numbers are confirmed, timings are agreed and seating plans start to take shape. It’s also when final meetings take place, helping ensure everyone is aligned ahead of the day itself.

  • Finalise guest numbers
  • Confirm timings
  • Complete seating plans
  • Schedule final meetings
  • The final weeks before the wedding

The final weeks before the wedding

In the final weeks, most of the work is done. What’s left is less about planning and more about anticipation. It’s a chance to step back a little and enjoy what’s ahead, rather than constantly organising it.

At this stage, everything is being checked, finalised and prepared so that the day itself can feel as relaxed and natural as possible.
